Thur 17th April - Weekly Notes

Under-16 Score Impressive Win

Glenroe 1-8, St Kierans 1-4

We had to withstand late pressure from St Kierans before we collected full points in our last game before the Junior cert exams.

Despite a long journey to Coolcappa, and missing a number of players through injury, we got off to a great start with a goal by Sean McGrath in  our first attack. Ciaran Kelly added two points to which S Kierans replied with two more. Glenroe continued to dominate the first half adding five more points to put the ahead 1-7 to 0-2 at half-time.

St Kierans had the advantage of the strong wind in the second half, so it was a question of how we were going to keep our lead. We started poorly conceding a point straight away from the throw-in. St Kierans scored another point in the the third minute of this half, and it looked as if we were going to come under strong pressure. However, Darren McCarthy shored up our defence, while Ciaran Kelly did great work around the middle of the field. James Armstrong, Conor Fenton and Edmond O’Sullivan were outstanding in this half. We did some powerful defending, while Ciaran Kelly scored another point in the twelfth minute.

A goal fro St Kierans with three minutes remaining brought them back into the game, but we did not panic and held our lead until the final whistle.

The Glenroe team was:

Padraig McGrath, Eoin Gallahue, James Armstrong, John McGrath, Darren McCarthy, Conor Fenton, Dylan Noonan, Ciaran Kelly, Edmond O'Sullivan, Sean McGrath, Gerard Leahy. Sub: Darren Hennessy.

However, Blackrock had the better of the second half and  ran out winners in the end.
